While Google Meet is useful, it is primarily meant for businesses and enterprises, so Google adding the Meet tab in the Gmail mobile app makes little sense for regular users. Thankfully, you can disable the Meet tab in Gmail on both Android and iPhone.

Let’s take a look at how you do it.

What Is the Meet Tab in Gmail For?

The Meet tab in Gmail will let you quickly join a meeting with a code supplied to you by another person. Alternatively, you can start a new meeting directly from within the Meet tab. You will get a link that you can share with others who want to join the meeting.

With work from home and video meetings on the rise, the Meet tab could be useful for some. But if you don’t use Google Meet for video meetings, the tab is a frustrating addition. Once you remove the tab, the entire bottom row is used to show emails in your inbox.

How to Disable the Google Meet Tab in Gmail for Android

The Meet tab in the Gmail mobile app is shown on a per-account basis. This means that if you have signed into two or more different Gmail accounts, you will have to disable the Meet tab individually for all of them.

Or, you can turn it off for your personal email account, and leave it visible for your work email.

Open the Gmail app on your Android device. Tap the hamburger menu button on the top-left corner, followed by Settings. Select the Gmail account for which you’d like to disable the Meet tab. Scroll down to the Meet section and disable the Show the Meet tab for video calling option.

How to Disable the Google Meet Tab in Gmail for iPhone

The process for disabling the Meet tab in the Gmail app for iPhone is largely the same as on an Android device.

Open the Gmail app on your iPhone or other iOS device. Tap the hamburger menu button on the top-left corner followed by Settings. Select the Gmail account for which you’d like to disable the Meet tab. Disable the toggle for the Meet option which states Show the Meet tab for video calling. Confirm your selection by tapping Turn off in the dialog box that pops up.

Remember that since the Gmail app shows the Meet tab on a per-account basis, you will have to do this for all Google accounts that you have signed into in the Gmail app.

If you do use Google Meet a lot, you can use its Saver Mode to reduce CPU and data usage.
